Detailed Draft Rules for Coaches

Detailed Draft Rules

This set of rules is being constructed to help ensure the integrity of our league by setting strict guidelines in the forming of LEAYSA Softball teams.  These rules will be followed exactly as spelled out below.  The following are the rules that will be applied while drafting eligible players in the 8U through 15U age groups.  However an agreement between all of the coaches of a certain age group may override some or all of the following rules, pending board approval.

1) Any girl that is changing teams must go through the draft process with the exception;

1a) The player's parent becomes a head coach or assistant coach of a newly formed team.  A BRAND NEW team may enter into the draft with the head coach's daughter and (1) assistant coach's daughter automatically on the roster.

2) Every team is to have at least one pick in the draft except in the rare occasion when a team is already at the max number of girls.  The roster size is based upon the number of girls registered for that season in a certain age group.

3) The draft order will be set by drawing numbers out of "the hat".  Every  team will have a equal chance at getting the first overall pick.  New Fall 2017 - A BRAND NEW team will get the first overall pick.

4) When it is determined that there will be an uneven number of girls on the team rosters the following rules apply;

4a) The team with the most returning players will max out their roster first and the team with the second most returning will max out next and so on down the line.

4b) When two teams enter into the draft with the same amount of returning players the number that the coach pulls to set the draft order will also set which team gets the extra player.

5) Any girl that is absent or does not participate in the player evaluations will be placed into the blind draft.  Once a player is entered into the blind draft they can no longer be selected by name.  They are assigned a number and when their number is pulled from "the hat" they will be placed on that team that drew her number.

5a) One exception to the participation rule stated above is, with board approval a girl may notify us ahead of time that they can only stay for part of the evaluations.  The board will then consider to let her go through the drills quickly and or participate in "most" of the drills.  This shows a true effort from the player and her parents thus she will be allowed to enter the normal draft proceedings.  This is subject to notification of the board and board member's approval.
